San Jose, Calif.—Fairchild Semiconductor touts its next-generation family of DrMOS devices—the XS DrMOS series—as the industry's first high-performance 6-by-6 mm DrMOS solution for synchronous DC/DC buck regulators for computing, game console, and consumer point-of-load (POL) applications.
The first member of the XS (extra-small) family, the FDMF6704, is a FET-plus-driver multichip module that replaces one driver IC, one high-side MOSFET, two low-side MOSFETS, and one bootstrap Schottky diode. Fairchild says the device, in a thermally enhanced MLP package, saves 84 percent board space compared to discrete solutions and 44 percent compared to 8-by-8 mm MLP packaged DrMOS modules. It delivers greater than 92 percent peak efficiency (greater than 88 percent under heavy loads), and meets Energy Star, Climate Savers, and Green Grid energy-efficiency specifications.
The 1-MHz FDMF6704 is optimized to work with a wide variety of controllers. It is compatible with both tri-state and logic-level (see FDM6704A) PWM controllers, and its PWM threshold levels can be tailored for a particular controller application. A 5-volt gate driver circuit and an improved PCB interface are designed in to boost performance. The company's SyncFET technology is integrated within the module's low-side MOSFET. Other features include dramatically reduced ringing and low EMI (and no need for snubber circuits). The module includes a diode emulation (SMOD) function for increased light-load efficiency.
The FDMF6704 has Pb-free terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the IPC/JEDEC J-STD-020 standard. It meets the European Union's directive on the restriction of the use of hazardous substances (RoHS).
