PORTLAND, Ore. Analog Devices has added to its lineup of Blackfin microcontrollers. The new lower-priced, lower-power units target voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephones, mobile handheld devices, automotive- and industrial-controllers.
"We have basically taken the [Blackfin] processor to a lower price point, a lower power point, and have added certain new peripherals to make it more attractive, with a higher level of integration," said Bhaskar Banerjee, product line manager for Blackfin products at ADI (Norwood, Mass.).
According to ADI, its new Blackfin BF51x devices includes instructions for both control functions and digital signal processing, plus the necessary peripherals, so that devices only need a single microcontroller plus a few support chips. For instance, VoIP applications only require a codec and a memory-chip to implement a phone.
Four initial members of the new family have clock speeds up to 400 MHz, 116 KB of RAM, an optional 4 Mb of flash, Secure Digital Input Output for connectivity to standard flash memory and Wi-Fi cards, on-chip lockbox security, 12 digital audio channels, 12 direct memory access channels, two dual-channel synchronous serial communication ports, a high-speed parallel peripheral interface, a two-wire interface, dual UARTs, two SPI-compatible serial peripheral interface ports, a three-phase pulse-width modulation unit for inductive motor control and a quadrature interface for rotary encoders.
The BF516 also adds an Ethernet 10/100 MAC and the BF518 supports the IEEE 1588 clock-synchronization protocol.
Global IP Solutions has crafted its VoiceEngine package of VoIP development software for the new Blackfin family. The Crosscore software and development tools are available from ADI, as are its VisualDSP++ development and debug environment.
