Exar Corporation has released two LED drivers capable of driving high power, high brightness LEDs up to 0.5 Amp and 1 Amp respectively.
The XRP7603 and XRP7604 devices complement and are pin-to-pin compatible with Exar's SP7600 rated at 2 Amp. With a 4.5 V to 29 V operating range these LED drivers can support most retail and architectural lighting systems which typically use 12 V or 24 V power sources. New consumer electronics devices can also find a use for these high current LED drivers, such as the latest LED compact projectors.
Operating at a frequency of 1.2 MHz with integrated loop compensation, Exar's family of high power step-down LED drivers fit within a minimal solution footprint - the combined size of the high brightness LED and its heatsink. A low 200 mV feedback reference voltage reduces the power dissipation in the current sense resistor while maximizing efficiency at up to 95 percent. Conversions from 29 V can be a challenge for many buck regulators; however, these LED drivers easily convert from 29 V to the 4 V across the LED with a guaranteed minimum on-time of 100 ns. Dynamic brightness control is achieved through a PWM or analog dimming scheme and a programmable over current and under voltage lock-out protection insures safe operation under abnormal operating conditions.

Samples of the XRP7603 and XRP7604 are available now. Offered in a thermally enhanced SO-8 package operating over the -40 to +85 degrees C temperature range, the XRP7603 and XRP7604 are respectively priced at $0.79 and $0.99 in 1K piece quantities.
