Microchip Technology Inc. announced two new digitally controlled DC/DC converter reference designs with advanced, high-efficiency topologies to help designers optimize contrasting requirements in the design process, including efficiency, power density and cost.
Both the quarter brick DC/DC reference design and the DC/DC LLC converter reference design use Microchipís 16-bit dsPIC33F GS series of digital-power digital signal controllers (video overview below) for fully digital control of the power-conversion and system-management functions.
It looks Microchip has good potential market with digital controlled power conversion products. However, as user I may ask them to extend their approach further. If I compare their solutions with other products in market, I may suggest or request for more integration to provide SoC type solution. That is they should include other parts like PWM, feedback sense and even power switch on this chip or atleast package.
I am currently working to use high power buck DCDC converter for my application. The ones i could find were from TI. It is good to know that i can also look at Microchip's site. But i did not write this comment only to say that.
I am actually looking for a DCDC converter solution with minimum EMC issues [especially magnetic]. These converter use some kind of RLC-circuit to convert high voltage to low voltage at high frequencies. Which means that such a converter still produce EM field [just like transformer] but at higher frequencies [200-300kHz].
Does anyone know which type of DCDC converters should i look for? Any expert reading this comment? Please respond.
Microchip reference design is very interesting and well done, especially for analog designers that are still hesitating to step to digital.
Combined with the best of analog world and efficient power-trains, digital-control and power management are already today offering an un-precedent level of flexibility that ICT systems' architects have already implemented in several applications. For them, having the possibility to digitally monitor and control the power delivered to any part of their board give them an amazing level of flexibility to accurately manage board-power distribution with result to save energy and improve reliability.
I would like to suggest you guys to watch the new video Ericsson posted on You Tube, which gives a good picture of what is today available and let imagine what tomorrow will be.
