I used the prior 800 and 900 volt parts on lightning suppresion high side protection circuit now flying on the Boeing 787 Deamliner. had accidntly over voltaged these parts while trying t get to 750 volts at another LRU way from the injection point near the controller. the tech running the power injector did not tell me how high the voltage was at the injectin location near the controller. When after many ycles over 00 volts inject the FETs finally failed. The passives and novel design integrating both the passives and active components alowed this ~ 3:1 over spec injection to pass faiure multple times. impressive parts.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
