austriamicrosystems and NXP Semiconductors N.V. have jointly developed the first in a series of reference solutions for product authentication in embedded consumer applications. The reference design incorporates the austriamicrosystems AS399x UHF RFID Reader IC and the NXP UCODE G2iL series. The two companies report that the reference design delivers the industry’s lowest power consumption, lowest solution cost, lowest complexity and highest level of integration.
Target applications include authentication of consumer goods to ensure product quality and consumer safety with items such as vacuum cleaner bags, water filters, and beverage concentrates. With RFID functionality, equipment manufacturers would be able to warn users about health risks, as well as about threats of product malfunction in cases when non-authentic consumable is used. And in cases when end user ignores such warnings and willingly feeds the equipment with consumable of unknown or non-approved quality, the equipment manufacturer would have the option to void equipment’s warranty.

The companies will be discussing the reference design at RFID/USN Korea 2010 2010/12/02 - 2010/12/04 Seoul, Korea Booth F120.
