Putting high-performance 10GbE network capabilities into servers located in multiple rooms on different floors of high-rises buildings and campuses just got easier. PLX Technology just announced a successful demo of 10Gbps Ethernet data and electrical transfer over a breakthrough distance of 300 meters using common and economical Cat6A unshielded twisted pair copper cable, and in full compliance with IEEE 802.3an. Previously, 100 meters was the typical Ethernet cable limit, which dramatically limited the number of applications possible.
The demo used a PLX 40nm-based TN8022 dual-port 10GBASE-T PHY transceiver chip, and was enabled by PLX-designed Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) repeaters. The TN8000 family of PHYs dissipates less than four watts per port at a full 100 meters, and two watts per port in short-reach mode. It also supports triple-rate Ethernet (100M/1G/10G) supporting backwards compatibility as well as future market demand.
The breakthrough performance and power achievements by PLX are based on such unique advancements as built in noise and interference mitigation, robust DSP algorithm, and its ultra-low power capabilities that feature a 50 percent reduction in power dissipation for typical long-term traffic patterns. Other features of the PLX 10GBASE-T PHYs are:
* Integrated MACsec per IEEE 802.1ae for secure Ethernet transmissions (confidential data exchange) and enhanced filtering for "denial of service" attacks
* Electromagnetic immunity (EMI) with high performance using a common mode sense, which improves electromagnetic cancellation, EMI robustness and system speed
* On-chip monitor and ADC for thermal management, featuring die junction temperature via MDIO register and alarm capabilities
* Analog return loss cancellation, pair and polarity swap, loopback, media dependent interface (MDI) tests, link health / fault monitoring
Building on its expertise in 10GBASE-T equipment as a result of the acquisition of Teranetics in September 2010, PLX boasts a 60% market share for 10GBASE-T PHY devices.
