Originally the folks at Achronix were focusing only on their Asynchronous technology. Personally I love Async, but I understand that the amazing FPGA performance (1.5GHz) is only available for "flow-through" type DSP algorithms ... my understanding (although I may be wrong) is that the performance is impacted when you have feedback. So it makes a lot of sense that they would create two device families -- a synchronous family for regular processing and an asynchronous family for flow-through algorithmic c"crunching" I also like the idea of application-targeted devices -- it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out over the next few years.
