I would think that the performance of the dedicated hardware solution FPGAs represent is the driving force behind their usage. If cost was the main factor I would agree that there are many more cost effective MCU demo/development boards being offered. FPGAs are really a market niche that fits only a subset of design needs; if performance is needed and a full custom solution is out of reach then the FPGA is truly the cost/performance way to go. I like the idea of reprogramming and the design exploration/flexibility that brings to the prototyping/proof of concept stages of design. Once the design is done and ready for production, it should be moved to the smallest device that can it can fit into to both save cost and allow for some tweaks later.

Agreed. I can't sell a 1800.00 board to my management as a learning tool.

Absolutely. The profit margins on FPGA devices are huge compared to the rest of the semiconductor industry. That is why people do not go for an FPGA solution unless they absolutely have to.

It is interesting to compare the price of the medium end FPGA kits with similar MCU kits. You can get a very similar featured board (in terms of interface capabilities) for a fraction of the price. For example, the Renesas RX62N with USB, Ethernet, audio, motor control, Accelerometer, etc is only $99. http://www.nuhorizons.com/development/board.asp?product=Renesas-Demonstration-Kit-RX62N

Of all the exhibits in the Pre-Apocalypse Era Museum, Breek was always in awe of the unearthed details and true-to-scale reproduction of a technological creation space that the long gone humans had once inhabited.
