The new Nexus 7 is the first device to ship with Android 4.3. Its major new features include support for Bluetooth 4.0 and OpenGL ES 3.0
An Android product manager told us the OpenGL 3.0 support "is a big deal for game developers," because it offers more colors per pixel, a new texture compression format, and other features that boost graphics.
During the event, game play was projected on to a flat-screen TV. It is clear that traditional game consoles face big competition from small devices.
The Android upgrade also includes a new digital rights management API, presumably to enhance protection for 1,080p video streams. It also supports restricted profiles for parental controls. The new code is available as an over-the-air upgrade.
