This is a great start! I have seen the specs of the processors from Hercules series safety processors from TI. The advantages are that lots of firmware effort in building diagnostics could be saved and it is cheaper. The maximum working frequency in 200MHz and has enough peripheral support for building smaller safety applications especially in the Automotive domain, but it does not have enough peripheral and speed for a bigger process safety application (e.g. Oil & Gas domain). Anybody has used these processors in the industrial process safety applications? Any advantage in reducing certification efforts?
Sanjib, as far as reducing certification efforts, TI offers support in a number of ways for helping with certification, in a program it calls SafeTI, including providing a lot of the documentation developers will need in obtaining certification for their final products.
Can't anwer the question about the speed for larger applications, though.
Rich, thanks for the information. I was not aware about the SafeTI service that TI was offering. Certainly it would assist in reducing the certification efforts as TI would already have made documentation related to their processors (e.g.FMEA) which could be used with little modification based on differences in applications and will save time and effort. This is really a good initiative...helps a lot compared to doing a safety program with a generic processor. Hoping soon they will come with a bigger processor in this series, with more Ethernet/serial port support, more external memory support, support for PCIe etc. & higher speed.
Thank you for the information. I understand that TI provides the service to make life easier. But please note that other than the processor you have number of components, hence for system design (e.g. a processor board design), the certified processor & documentation might help in reducing the efforts, but still as a system we need to do lots of things to get certification for the system. Because ultimately the system is required to have certified by the agencies like TUV per IEC61508 or ISO 26262 or what ever.
Secondly, I tried to say, the TI safety certified processors does not seem to have enough speed and resources for doing bigger application in "industrial process safety" domains (IEC 61511): such as Firs and Gas, burner management systems etc. But these are good enough for smaller application in automotive domain or machine safety applications etc.
Hi, I am a member of the Hercules MCU team at TI. It is correct that Hercules safety MCUs are popular in automotive and machine safety applications but they are also used in several IEC61508/IEC61511 industrial process safety systems including Burner Management System and other Safety Instrumented Systems.
Components within a Process safety systems have varying requirements for performance and capability. The Hercules MCU family does provide a wide range of performance capability that is sufficient for several of these components but certainly not all.
