I wonder how long these standards for particular manufacturers would remain confidential, or exactly how much damage would result if they leaked out?   It doesn't seem to me this information would give away any serious trade secrets that would affect the marketplace...

This is the way to satisfy the dual requirement of high performance and high level programming -> standardization of interfaces.

Parallel programming has been one of the banes of the software industry for decades. I'd love to hear some anecdotes from the trenches about how it is going for today's increasingly many hetero core processors.
