I just heard some jolly exciting news. Hopefully you've been following my blogs on the recent launch of the free 3D modeling and assembly tool -- DesignSpark Mechanical -- which has been brought to us by the guys and gals at Allied Electronics, RS Components, and SpaceClaim. (See: Allied/RS Bring Free 3D Design Software to Everyone on the Planet!, Allied Who? RS Who? DesignSpark What?, and I Bet My 3D Holographic Watch Is Better Than Yours.)
Well, starting today -- Wednesday September 18, 2013 -- four design teams have embarked on a 48-hour design challenge to create life-changing inventions using DesignSpark Mechanical.
As you will see from the design challenge webpage, the members of the four teams and the companies they represent read like a "Who's Who" of... well, just about everything to do with electronics and mechanical design.
For the next 48 hours, the teams will be coming up with their own ideas and combining these with suggestions from the DesignSpark online community. These ideas will then be realized in glorious 3D using DesignSpark Mechanical. I cannot tell you how much I wish I could be there watching everything as it happens, observing the exploding ideas, and the designs evolving from concept to 3D realization.
Then, starting on Friday 20th September, 2013, we will all have a week to vote on our favorite design. I cannot wait to see what the different teams come up with. Even more exciting is the fact that these designs will be made available for free from DesignSpark.com under an open-source license, which means we can download them and play with them ourselves, perhaps even running them through a 3D printer.
I'm watching a live video feed from the design challenge webpage as we speak. As I said at the beginning of this column, this is all rather exciting. What do you think?
