Even Allwinner is going upmarket next year with some eigfht-core mobile SoCs.

yeah, true. But Allwinner doesn't have modem chips like Spreadtrum does.

Depends on which market segment you are going for. It looks like the high end market is saturating though, so low end offers more growth opportunities.

for the low-end market, multi-core processors are available and they are stealing the customers form the mid- to high-end market. Coming up with single core for low-end market smartphone seems like a wrong move.
