Mike Santori, business and technology fellow at National Instruments, kicked off NI Days in Boston with an overview of the day's events. He noted how everything is being connected by asking, 'How many of you are wearing a watch?' A few people admitted to having one. Then, he asked 'How many of you have one of these?' referring to a smartphone or tablet.
I replied, 'I have three with me today.' Santori then explained how we've moved from a PC platform, to a web-based platform, to a smartphone or tablet-based platform for our computing, and instrument control is moving there, too.

We were glad you were able to attend, Martin! We've missed not seeing you at NIWeek. It was great to see the strong turnout and interest in the technical sessions and expo. And of course the closing keynote by Dean Kamen was truly inspirational. Look forward to seeing you again soon. -Richard

Having been to many NI Weeks, but none in several years, I was glad to attend a local event. Thanks NI for coming to Boston.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
