A few weeks, ago I wrote about a desktop wire bender called DIWire from a company called Pensa Labs. This little beauty could be a mega game changer with regard to prototyping, fabrication (small runs), and education. (See: Prototyping TNG: Desktop Wire Bender.)
Well, I just heard from the guys and gals at Pensa Labs that they've officially launched their DIWire KickStarter project. Amazingly enough, even though this project launched only a few hours ago as I pen these words, I see that they've already raised $36,000+ out of their $100,000 goal. If I were a betting man ("which thank the Lord I'm not, sir") I would say that the folks at Pensa Labs have come up with a real winner here.
You can use the DIWire to bend a variety of materials, but the one that interests me the most is 1/8" galvanized steel bar. Once you've created the various shapes you wish to use, you can solder or spot-weld them together (the chaps and chapesses at Pensa Labs have come up with a selection of ingenious clips to hold things together until you make the final connections).
What can you make with the DIWire? Seriously? You really have to ask? Come on... you are limited only by your imagination. If you bounce over to the Kickstarter project page, you will see a collection of possibilities (like the simple pendant lamps shown below), but these really only scratch the surface.
Have you ever seen those Rube Goldberg-esq kinetic sculptures in airports in which balls roll around wire frames? There are a bunch of examples on YouTube, such as the following:
Now, this particular kinetic sculpture employs wires that are bent in three dimensions, while DIWire is (currently) limited to only two, but I'm sure it would be possible to come up with a similar sculpture that employed the DIWire's capabilities to its fullest extent. If I had my own DIWire, this is one of the first things I would be looking at building. What about you? What would you make if you were the proud possessor of one of these little beauties?
