I think this is the point in the computer's evolution where biology is moore (pun intended :-) ) closely replicated. Massively parallel processing will be the answer and 3D allows this to be done with a reduction in area. The human brain is billions of processors running at a few hertz with massively parallel connections between them. This is where we should be heading
