Hmmm, I do not think the developed industrialised countries arein charge of the world economy, well not they used too anyway.  There is a seismic shift in wealth and power taking place from west to east, and north to south. We ignore that at our peril....

I wonder how long emerging markets can really drive this space and when fully-industrialized countries have to once again take charge of the worldwide economy...after all they do have the advantage in terms of greater manufacturing capabilities and elaborate services as well.

It is truly a mixed bag. Mid range mobile is booming (thanks to demand from emerging markets) but other sectors which rely more heavily on demand from developed countries are suffering. The IC industry does operate in isolation from the wider economy.

The industry is rocking in the last few quarters. Mobile is driving the whole industry up. This was what we expected the green tech to do. It is now coming in mobile. Hope it keeps going.

TSMC is quick to dampen the mood by posting such modest expectations for Q1 on the heels of such impressive results for last year's Q4. I wonder how accurate of a prediction that is, and how much the company stands to gain from such reduced expectations.

The growth shows some strength in the industry.  Good to see in these times.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
