Fujitsu's smart walking-stick combines GPS and wireless networking. Family members on a PC can download directions over cellular, WiFi, or Bluetooth to the cane, so their loved one can find the way to the store and back. When the walker gets to an intersection where he needs to turn, the cane vibrates then indicates the direction.
The cane also includes a built-in thumb sensor for pulse rate. If you are getting overworked, it may suggest you sit for a while. The prototype runs for about four hours on batteries.
