Is anyone surprised or impressed by Qualcomm's performance or does this not seem like a great quarter--even if it beats expectations

I think many try to judge Qualcomm's performance based on that of other high-tech companies, especially those they compete against Qualcomm in mobile SoCs. However, Qualcomm's strength is really in its cellular modem technology and even if they don't win the SoC socket, they often win the modem, especially in applications using LTE. Qualcomm has a clear leadership position in modem technology and it is difficult seeing this changing anytime soon.

Qualcomm has pushed many other competitors out of the business.  Freescale and TI have abandoned the business.  They should continue their dominance of the segment.

They are in a strong position when it comes to modem technology. In other areas, I'm not sure. It really depends on how you read their results--which are definitely higher than their expectations, for one.
