5. California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo
Located on a suburban, six-acre campus in San Luis Obispo, Calif., California Polytechnic State University is a public co-ed institution founded in 1901, which currently enrolls 17,680 students. The student-faculty ratio at California Polytechnic is 19:1, and about 15 percent of its classes take place with fewer than 20 students in the room.
The university offers about 70 majors, including engineering, business, management, agriculture, architecture, and biological and biomedical sciences. The school offers more than 80 different laboratories. For the 2013-2014 school year, in-state tuition totaled $8,997, and out-of-state tuition stood at $20,157.
