I love this 5-minute format -- in addition to being a co-host, I'm planning on giving one of the 5-minute presentations myself -- in fact I'm planning on three -- a different one each day -- unless we get too many other folks, in which case I'll gracefully yield the podium...

Max, you are the master of the five-minute presentation!  Look forward to seeing whatever utterly useless gadget you've dreamed up this year!!!!

I was afraid that I'd only be presenting vapor. The Atmega32U4 chips that my two boards require for Arduino compatibility are out of stock everywhere in the package I need.

Fortunately, Twitter came to the rescue. I was able to make a trade and I now have actual working boards. The only further hint I'll give is that, from a software pwspective, the two boards look just like an Arduino Leonardo.

My other Smackdown project uses a Microchip PIC, the enemy of the Atmega, so it wasn't affected by the shortage.

@Duane: I was afraid that I'd only be presenting vapor.

I think you can get tablets for that (but just in case, I'll sit in the back row while you are presenting :-)

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
