the motive is simple, price...why buy a box from Cisco if you can buy SDN box for 1/10 of the cost?...that is why the overall networking hardware revenue is descreasing and Cisco stock suffering (and others who produce high end equipment, Cisco is just an example as they are still number 1)

That helps, thanks, because we've already got Ethernet and x86.

the question may be whether a central authority is necessary to decide such things at all.

It will take a lot for SDN to move well beyond big data centers. There needs to be an opportunity as well as a motive for doing so. It is a good sign that Amazon and Microsoft are adopting SDN, however. It shows that broader adoption is possible.

so what is exactly the question? I think he is merely implying that there will be no central authority to decide where your IP packet goes...that at least is the OpenFlow part of that sentence

...networking specialist brother or sister please help me out with this one?

"The future of the network is Ethernet, x86, and OpenFlow -- nothing is controlled by a single party, it's all community based."

Thanks.

Why are surpised Rick?...the whole concept of SDN is to lower the networking cost and get free of expensive Cisco boxes...I would expect Amazon to be the first to jump on this concept...with Google, Facebook etc quickly to follow...in my view in 5 years the whole market will move over, at least in new purchases...Kris

It was news to me that Amazon and M'soft data centers are adopting SDN. I'd love to hear any details on that...or opinions on whether SDN ever moves beyond the really big data centers.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
