Startup Paper Battery Co. has partnered with battery pack vendor TWS Industrial to create an enhanced battery system that incorporates ultrathin ultracapacitor technology to extend its performance. Comprising an ultracapacitor wrapped around a Li-ion battery pack, the system is claimed to extend the efficiency of the battery by as much as 15% while also increasing battery life and providing EMI shielding and thermal benefits.
In what could pave the way to a practical means of hydrogen energy storage and efficient fuel cells, engineers at the University of Maryland have developed a method for folding tiny squares of graphene into a box that will open and close in response to an electric charge. The resulting "Nanobox" (see image and video [0:31] below) is able to pack more hydrogen atoms than was previously thought possible, with a hydrogen storage density of 9.5% hydrogen by weight. In product news, STMicroelectronics has introduced a high-voltage SiC power MOSFET with a temperature rating of 200°C. The 45 A 1200 V N-channel SCT30N120 has a typical RDS(on) of 80 mΩ (VGS = 20 V, ID = 20 A) and is available in the company's HiP247 package.
Linear Technology has introduced a complete input power interrupt ride-through DC/DC system. The LTC3355 features a 1 A main buck regulator with a built-in 5 A boost regulator for temporary backup of a 2.7 to 5 V output voltage using a single supercapacitor energy source.
Micrel has announced a 4 MHz, 2 A 100% duty cycle synchronous buck regulator in a 10-pin 2x2 mm DFN package. The MIC23163/4 operates from an input voltage of 2.7 to 5.5 V and achieves a typical efficiency of 85% at 1 mA. The company also announced the MIC2111 DC/DC multi-mode controller, which can operate in a valley current mode or a voltage mode configuration and deliver up to 50 A.
Ericsson has added two DC/DC regulators to its BMR461 12x12x8 mm digital POL modules. The BMR4612001 and BMR4614001 offer 6 and 18 A current output, respectively, and are 100% footprint compatible with the existing 12 A BMR4613001.
A new 1400 V IGBT from International Rectifier is optimized for induction heating and soft-switching applications. The IRG7PK35UD1PBF is packaged with an ultra-low-forward-voltage diode and has a typical VCE(ON) of 2.0 V and switching speeds of 8 to 30 kHz.
Cornell Dubilier has announced polymer-aluminum capacitors with a life expectancy of 10,000 hours when operated at 105°C at rated voltage with full ripple current load. The surface-mount HZA series offers capacitance values from 10 to 330 µF at voltage ratings from 25 to 80 VDC.
Finally, Illinois Capacitor has introduced a series of polymer capacitors that operate up to 125°C and 160 VDC. The AVG series comprises more than 40 radial-leaded devices offering capacitance values from 4.7 to 1500 µF.
