Car radar blind spots?

What is the coverage of a car radar system? Can it detect a sign post at every point along the rear bumper when you are backing up? What is the vertical coverage? Can it detect any hight or low object that would hit the car if you continued backwards? It seems that blind spots in the detection systems could lead to unexpected accidents if drivers depend upon them as they back up.
