Panasonic Corporation has announced that is has developed a portable, standalone photovoltaic Power Supply Container designed to provide power to areas without electricity in developing countries. The 3,029-mm (W) x 2,438-mm (L) x 2,591-mm (H) structure is equipped with 12 HIT 240 solar modules -- capable of generating about 3 kW -- and 24 lead-acid storage batteries (17.2 kWh as total). It requires no onsite professional construction work to install.

The International Conference on Measures and Weights will be looking to agree on a new definition of the ampere at the upcoming 25th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures in November. Draft Resolution A -- Revision of the International System of units, the SI -- of the conference proposes a revision of the SI that "links the definitions of the kilogram, ampere, kelvin, and mole to exact numerical values of the Planck constant h, elementary charge e, Boltzmann constant k, and Avogadro constant NA, respectively," which would change the wording of the definitions of the SI units for time, length, mass, electric current, thermodynamic temperature, amount of substance, and luminous intensity.
Preceding the agenda for this conference, scientists at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt had, for the first time, succeeded in showing that tracing the base unit of current to a fundamental constant -- the electric charge of a single electron -- is possible. In product news, Analog Devices has introduced an ultra-low-power boost regulator for PV and thermoelectric energy harvesting systems that converts harvested power down to a 10-µW to 1-mW range with sub-µW operation losses. The ADP5090 features a cold start from an input as low as 380 mV, and is then functional in the input voltage range from 100 mV to 3 V.
International Rectifier introduced a general-purpose current sense IC housed in a 5-pin SOT-23 package. The IR25750 extracts the VDS(on) of a power MOSFET or the VCE(on) of an IGBT during the switch on-time, then blocks the high drain voltage to during the MOSFET or IGBT off-time. The company also expanded its StrongIRFET power MOSFET family to include 20-, 25-, and 30-V devices for high-performance computing and communications applications.
XP Power has launched a 6-W dc/dc converter series in an ultra-compact SIP-8 package. The single and dual regulated-output ITX series offers an 86% (typ) efficiency and comprises four 2:1 input voltage ranges of 4.5-9 VDC, 9-18 VDC, 18-36 VDC, and 36-75 VDC.
Diodes Inc. has announced a high-stability, low-power shunt voltage reference in SOT23 and TO92 package options. The ZXRE330 features an output voltage tolerance of ±2% (ZXRE330E) and ±0.5% (ZXRE330A) at +25ºC.
New 650-V IGBTs from STMicroelectronics are claimed to have up to 40% lower turn-off energy losses than competing high-frequency devices. The HB series features a Vce(sat) down to 1.6 V (typical) and a maximum operating junction temperature of 175°C.
TDK has added 12- and 15-V models to its ZWS300BAF series ac/dc supplies. The 300-W supplies operate from 85 to 265 VAC, are voltage output adjustable by up to ±10%, and feature a 10-year electrolytic capacitor lifetime.
