Per-Channel or Total Capacity

Hi Adam -- in this column you say "The performance of the devices has also been expanded at the top end.  The previous Logic and Logic16 devices had a max digital sampling rate of 24MS/s and 100MS/s respectively.  The newest devices max out at 500MS/s.  On the analog side of the equation, the max sampling rate that can be had is 50MS/s.  This equates out to about 5MHz of bandwidth at the -3dB point."

Are these numbers per channel, or the total capacity of the device for all channels?

Hi Clive -- these numbers are per-channel.

The performance numbers do go down once the data rate exceeds the USB pipe bandwidth -- i.e. when you add more channels than can be supported simultaneously.

We put together an interactive configuration tool so you see what to expect for a given application:  https://www.saleae.com/#interactive-tile

@joegarrison: Hi Clive -- these numbers are per-channel.

Wonderful -- thansk for getting back to me so quickly -- this really does look like a very useful addition to one's test setup.

Adam,

Interesting device. Which devices will you compare against this one?

Can you program each channel invidually for analog or digital inputs?

Joe,

Thanks for chiming in, and welcome to EETimes.  I am surprised that you are back on your feet.  It sounds like you guys had a late night last night.

I personally have the Openbench Logic Sniffer from Dangerous Prototypes.  I was also going to do a comparison based upon what I can find on the web at these price points.  These would be more of a paper comparison.

According to what has been told to me and what their device simulator has on their webpage, you can have each channel taking both analog and digital or set to either or.  Each channel can be configured individually.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for today’s commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
