Those processors are due to ship during the first half of 2015, though samples will be available to developers by the second half of this year, according to Qualcomm. In addition to their still-theoretical super-high-speed LTE networking capabilities, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 and 808 will get a major boost in graphics power. The higher-end 810 will support 4K Ultra HD graphics in both displays and cameras and have camera gyro-stabilization to support 4K video at 30 frames per second and 1080p video at 120 frames per second.
The chipset includes quad-core, 64-bit ARM Cortex CPUs and Qualcomm's Adreno 430 GPU, which is designed to improve graphics performance 30 percent and cut power use by 20 percent, according to Qualcomm. Both chips will come with the same LTE-Advanced and WiFi speeds, but the Snapdragon 808 will support 2K displays while the 810 will support 4K. The 808 will use Qualcomm's Adreno 418 GPU -- with a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1600 -- rather than the higher-performing Adreno 430 the Snapdragon 810 will carry.
The 810 will be the highest-performing Snapdragon in Qualcomm's lineup, with higher compute power and far more muscle for graphics and networking than the Snapdragon 610 and 615 chips the company announced in February.
"This will be used for gaming," Murthy Renduchintala, executive vice president of Qualcomm's chip unit said in the announcement. Both are designed around quad-core ARM Cortex-A57 CPUs and Cortex-A53 CPUs, but the 808 supports LPDDR3 memory, while the 810 supports LPDDR4.
The latest versions of the high-speed modems to be built into the new Snapdragons come from Qualcomm subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies, which demonstrated the 3-stream carrier aggregation February 26 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The modems support 3G/LTE multimode networks at 40 MHz for LTE TDD and FDD as well as a range of 3G/4G networks including WCDMA/MC-HSPA, CDMA, 1x/EVDO, GSM/EDGE, and TD-SCDMA. The first mobile to have the LTE Cat 6 built in was Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, which was specially modified for the demonstration in Barcelona.
