Another breakthrough power source...

I've just read my weekly dose of good news regarding another breakthrough power source (this time a new dual carbon battery). Between batteries and solar cells, it seems that almost every week brings news of another sustainable, safe, and potentially inexpensive power source. The upbeat press releases seem to gloss over the years of R&D to productionize and realize the benefits - as well as the common glitches encountered along the way. I'd love to see a "post mortem" of the breakthrough press releases. Where are we on the journey? What root causes are there in the failed attempts and what do they teach us? It feels like we're hearing the first chapters of dozens of great stories - but the rest of the books have never been written.

We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for todays commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
