A new battery technology claimed to be more sustainable, safer, longer lasting, and faster charging than lithium-ion batteries has been developed by startup Power Japan Plus in partnership with scientists at Kyushu University. The battery, called the Ryden dual carbon battery, uses carbon fiber electrodes and an organic electrolyte as the conducting fluid. (See the 29-second video below.)
The dual carbon battery is said to have a lifetime of more than 3,000 cycles and to be able to charge 20 times faster than a standard lithium-ion battery, while potentially costing less. Initial applications are seen in the safety-focused medical and satellite industries, with electric vehicles a clear future possibility.

Automaker BMW has unveiled a solar carport concept for its all-electric BMW i3 and hybrid BMW i8 plug-in sports car. The carport is designed with sustainable materials -- including carbon elements and bamboo struts -- and uses high-grade glass-on-glass solar modules. (See image below.) A wall-box charging unit indicates the amount of solar energy that goes into the car and provides an analysis of recent charges that shows the respective proportions of solar versus grid power used.
In parallel with the launch of its i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, BMW has presented a solar carport using sustainable materials and high-grade glass-on-glass solar modules.
In product news, Cree has announced an SiC MOSFET with an on-resistance of 25 mΩ in an industry-standard 3-pin TO-247 package. The 1200-V C2M0025120D has a pulsed current rating of 250 A and a positive temperature coefficient.
An industrial power device tester from Mentor Graphics is designed for power cycling and thermal testing of electronics components to simulate and measure lifetime performance. The MicReD Industrial 1500A can test and monitor up to three devices at a time, triggering a series of voltage, current, power, and temperature measurements when trouble begins to occur. Linear Technology recently introduced a synchronous, current-mode buck-boost converter that delivers up to 1 A of continuous output from a wide range of power sources. The LTC3114-1 features a 2.2 to 40-V input and 2.7 to 40-V output range that provides a regulated output with inputs above, below, or equal to the regulated output. The company also introduced the LT3753 active clamp synchronous forward controller with an 8.5 to 100-V input range.
Intepro Systems has announced a new series of dc electronic loads for battery testing. The EL97xx series is available with power ratings from 150 to 6,000W, with an input rating of 0 to 500V.
CUI has launched four new compact open-frame power supplies for ITE, industrial and consumer applications. The VOF Series (VOF-30, VOF-50, VOF-70, and VOF-85) is available in 30-, 50-, 70-, and 85-W versions and offers output voltage options of 5, 12, 15, 18, 24, 28, and 48 Vdc.
XP Power has announced a new series of single- and dual-output 400-W convection cooled power supplies. The 1U profile chassis-mount SDH400 series measures 203.0 x 127.0 x 40.64 mm and provides all popular nominal output voltages.
Microprocessor-controlled three-phase DC/AC inverters from Absopulse Electronics deliver 10,000 VA of continuous output with pure sine-wave output voltage over a temperature range of 0°C to +50°C without derating. The CTP 10K series offers three-phase outputs of 380 or 400 V RMS (line-to-line) at the required frequency and operates from 48-, 125-, 250-, or custom DC input voltages.
Finally, BetaDyne has announced a series of high-voltage-output DC/DC products designed for use in telecom systems. The 35-W EBL35 series offers 2:1 input ranges based around nominal inputs of 12, 24, 48, and 120 V, and single or dual outputs that can be set as two adjustable isolated outputs of 120, +/-120, or 240 V.
