Ever since its start in 1976, National Instruments has been in the automated test business. The company started with GPIB interfaces, then expanded into instruments based on ISA, PCI, PCIe, VXI, USB, and it invented PXI. With VirtualBench, NI has moved into the bench instrument market. The company sent a review unit. Here's my report.
- Mixed signal 100-MHz oscilloscope with 2 analog and 34 logic inputs
- 5½-digit multimeters
- Function generator
- DC power supply, 6 V and ±25 V
- 8-channel digital I/O port
This report covers the DMM, function generator, and mixed-signal oscilloscope. I've yet to try the power supply and digital I/O. Figure 1 shows VirtualBench atop an HP 34401A DMM.
