An electric car designed by engineering students at the University of New South Wales in Australia has established a new record for single-charge travel for high-speed electric vehicles. The hybrid solar-powered Sunswift vehicle -- whose solar panels were switched off for this test -- traveled over 500 km at an average speed of more than 100 km/hr on a single battery charge, breaking a 26-year-old world speed record.

The car's designers are hoping the test demonstrates that the car is ready for practical use, and expect the vehicle -- called the Sunswift eVe -- to meet Australian road registration requirements in as little as a year, which would make it the first street-legal solar-powered vehicle. While obvious comparisons are being made with Tesla, the eVe seats only two people, has a carbon-fiber body that weighs only 661 lbs, and doesn't offer many standard features found in production vehicles.

A new buck-boost controller from Linear Technology features a -55įC to 150įC operating junction temperature range. The 80-V LT8705 offers up to 98% efficiency and operates from input voltages above, below, or equal to the regulated output voltage.
