Home automation market in India seems to be catching-up with rest of the world at pace much faster than I thought. As the number of smart phone users are increasing every day, familiarity with the apps would help the users to operate these devices without the need to have any sort of training or without the need to know about the technology.

Don't Forget The User Interface

Sophisticated controls sound great - but don't forget the user interface. If you go out and leave the babysitter at home can s/he turn on the lights, turn down the heat, or turn off the TV? One benefit of the old mechanical devices was that they all used the same familiar interfaces.  I could manage the environment as necessary in a new house without a training course. Now with divergent proprietary interfaces it becomes increasingly difficult to do anything.

Logitech is growing in this space

I just set up a new Logitech Harmony Ultimate Home TV remote, and I was surprised to see the options for several home control systems. It even goes out and looks for the devices on the local network, instead of having to be told about them. It doesn't seem to work with my Honeywell wifi-enabled thermostat, but that might be available soon as well. It's a long road, but we are finally starting to see some of this happening.

@MWagner_MA Agreed. They have been a poster child of embedded systems for longer than I have been at EE Times. If you know anyone there I should talk to about building controls, drop me a line.

Rick, one of the biggest in the US is Johnson Controls (an old employer of mine).  It would be interesting to see what they are up to in this arena.

As I get time, I'd like to touch base with other big building controls suppliers to get their views. If you are one or know one, drop me a line at rick.merritt@ubm.com
