The Boston Globe technology reporter was in local TV the oterh day, having just come back from CES (you want hype, well there it it). Anyway, he talked about security issues versus convenience. For example, if your clothes dryer knows you're not home, it could adjust timing and temperature to maximize efficiency against drying your clothes quickly. But, if the machine knows why can't a hacker/burglar know? It leads to a whole new technology used for crime.

Having the ability to program your thermostat from your phone sounds great, but then again.

@MeasurementBlues The hype around IoT is infurating.

I'll say it again - this reminds me of the ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) hype of 25 years ago.  The acronym very quickly became bastardized to "Innovations Subscribers Don't Need" and of course "I Smell Dollars Now!" - exactly what IoT marketeering is all about today.

A recent blog "The Thing Is..." by David Benjamin ( http://www.eetimes.com/author.asp?section_id=36&doc_id=1325249 ) inspired a beautiful new acronym via the response from DougInRB - "The Insanity of Things".  Right on, Doug!

The hype around IoT is infurating. It will all come crashing down over security issues. People will buy cheap IoT products that will not only not prevent attacks, but add viruses to home networks.

With IOT coming up testing will take another level. The ease to perform test and remotely will be a necessity. As usual it will be ever green part of technology that will keep getting business.
