Google's Daydream VR, built on the graphics cores of the latest Qualcom Snapdragon 802 SoC, is said to be tuned to deliver fine grained pre-emption to reduce motion-to-photon latency, a key metric to make sure displays change as fast as a user's head moves.  "It took a lot of effort" from deep in the SoC through Android to the application to hit the 20 millisecond target.  The sensors themselves need to support fast sampling at rates of 100 MHz to a GHz.

Qualcomm developed an algorithm it calls 'Visual Inertial Odometry' to track head motion across six-degrees of freedom.  It correlates on Snapdragon's embedded Hexagon DSPs data from a handset's accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer and cameras.  In a white paper, Qualcomm claims its Snapdragon 820 has less than 18mS motion-to-photon latency.  "To put this [spec] challenge in perspective," it says, "a display running at 60 Hz is updated every 17mS, and a display running at 90 Hz is updated every 11mS."

If one is to assume that Microsoft has followed a similar 18mS motion-to-photon latency target-specification w/their HoloLens HPU and employs just a 2MP camera; then we must be stepping back to the days of 30fps, 60Hz refresh rates and >18mS GTG response times. 

I reckon the "proper" HoloLens Augmented Reality hardware will not be [errrr....] coming to a theatre near me anytime soon... or until V3, whichever is first!

It's not 10W but less than 10W, or as I was told "single-digits" which could be anywhere from 1-9

Why would they use 28nm for a device that dissipates 10 watts? No wants a 10 watt heater attached to their head; using a more modern process would save a lot of power meaning less heat and a allow for a small battery meaning lighter weight.
