The first applications of 5G are actually for fixed broadband. Companies like Verizon, AT&T, and Google, have determined that fiber-to-the-home is simply too expensive, primarily due to the several hours it takes at each home, to connect it to the neighborhood PON. The initial deployments of 5G would cut out that lengthy housecall, while still relying on the neighborhood PON for backhaul.

So at least initially, 5G and 4G will fill different roles. For the fixed wireless service, 4G is inadequate, except perhaps in rural settings.

I appreciate the long term work, but could I have stable 3G or 4G connection first?

The promise of mmwave is: "higher data rates over distances of tens to hundreds of meters".
I don't need that, I need a usable connection in a noisy environment such as a commuter train.

From the carriers perspective I guess the use of mmwave is to save power and more expensive bandwidth in densely populated areas such as malls and stadiums?
