Maxim Integratedís EE-SIM interactive tool.
Design and simulation platforms typically cost a pretty penny, just look at the SolidWorks platform and you will quickly understand why. There are tools for everything from conceptual design parameters to projected materials cost and everything in between. For those that can't afford those software suites can always turn to Maxim Integrated's EE-SIM Design Generation and Simulation tool, which does what the name suggests. The platform allows users to input their design requirements, which automatically generates an interactive schematic where users can adjust the individual components to their specifications. Once they have selected their components, they can then simulate their designs, which result in easy to read waveforms (including Bode plots and voltage graphs). Users can even save their schematics and download them with included manufacturer part numbers. That's quite impressive for a free design and simulation platform. It has done some heavy lifting for myself on jobs, well

For viewing Gerber files I recommend GC-Prevue from www.graphicode.com.  It is a free Gerber file viewer.  They also have other more-capable purchasable tools.

Quite Universal Circuit Simulator (QUCS) is a great little Spice-like open-source tool that runs quickly, has a wide range of components, rather intuitie interface (but a so-so manual), and will execute S-parameter analysis. Available at qucs.sourceforge.net/.

I've used Eureqa by www.nutonian.com, sounds similar.  There's a useful but limited free version.

I have tried FreePCB couple of times, it is not bad for most projects with 16 layers or less. Some features I wish it had are viewing Gerber files, import/export of DXF files and print capability!

What is the basis of this ranking?

Is this ranking based on a survey of engineers? If so, what is the size of the sample and how was the sample chosen?

:-)  Yes, it can be a rare commodity when engineers interact with non-engineers!  Oh, well, c'est la vie!

I cannot disagree.  I suppose I've been lucky a lot of the time; I usually have the opportunity to insist that things are done properly.  I don't take that for granted. ;)

Not disputing that.  But time is a constraint that must also be accommodated...and meeting the schedule is not always "not good engineering."

I think we have to meet in the middle here.

David Patterson, known for his pioneering research that led to RAID, clusters and more, is part of a team at UC Berkeley that recently made its RISC-V processor architecture an open source hardware offering. We talk with Patterson and one of his colleagues behind the effort about the opportunities they see, what new kinds of designs they hope to enable and what it means for todayís commercial processor giants such as Intel, ARM and Imagination Technologies.
