Microprocessor core Toshiba America Electronic Components (TAEC) has released a new microprocessor core and microprocessor to meet the need for a high-performance, low-power RISC core. The R3900 RISC processor core is a 32-bit MIPS RISC-based CPU core with 52.5 Dhrystone MIPS and power dissipation of approximately 400mW at 50MHz. The R3900 design includes variable instruction cache and data cache sizes and parameters. TAEC says the device is ideal for applications like PDAs, set-top boxes, multimedia, fax/modems, and games. Southern Cross, TAEC's new microprocessor, is the first standalone microprocessor to use the R3900. The Southern Cross is designated TMPR3901F. Samples will be available in May; full production is slated for the third quarter this year. Cost is expected to be $30 each in 1,000-piece quantities. The price of the R3900 RISC core will be dependent on individual requirements. Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. (TAEC), San Jose, CA Contact: 1-800-879-879-4963. FPGAs Cypress Semiconductor has introduced 8,000-gate versions of their popular pASIC 380 family of FPGAs. The two new devices, the CY7C387A and CY7C388A are fully compliant with the PCI Rev2.0 spec for all speed grades. They are targeted at a wide array of applications such as logic consolidation, bus interface, memory controllers, and PCI-based systems. The CY7C387A offers 114 I/O pins and eight input/clock pins in a 144-pin thin-quad flatpack package. The CY7C388A, with 172 I/O pins and eight input/clock pins, is optimized for high I/O applications. It comes in a 208-pin plastic-quad flatpack package. The FPGAs combine high-density Vialink programming elements with Cypress' VL2.6 CMOS process technology (0.65µm). Software support for the new FPGAs is provided in Cypress' Warp 3 development tool. the CY7C388A is available today priced at $92.75 each in 100-unit quantities. System verification tool Designers working with Verilog can use the Gemini CSX system verification tool from IKOS to provide mixed-level simulation for ASIC and systems design. The tool operates under the Verilog-XL logic simulator (Cadence Design Systems) and merges Verilog-XL with the NSIM hardware accelerator (also from IKOS). Gemini CSX gives Verilog designers the ability to move all or portions of a Verilog HDL design to NSIM, while retaining access to Verilog-XL's debug capabilities from anywhere in the design hierarchy. Platform requirements for Gemini CSX include either Sun SPARCstations running Sun OS 4.xx or later, or the Hewlet-Packard HP 9000 series 700 workstations running HP-UX 9.xx or later. Verilog-XL v1.6C5 or later is also required, as is the NSIM accelerator for accelerated simulation. The product will begin shipment in the second quarter of 1995. List price is $25,000 for a single-user floating license. IKOS Systems Inc. Contact Larry Melling: (408) 366-8522. EMI/EMC/SIA software The EMI/EMC and signal integrity analysis software package SI Eminence is being upgraded. New features are intended to predict and ensure electromagnetic compliance. SI, introduced last year, combines singnal integrity analysis and modeling with the ability to characterize full-wave and radiative effects for high-speed designs. The upgrade, v3.2, adds features allowing engineers to simulate emissions, susceptibility, and ESD effects of different design alternatives such as enclosure size and shape, ground structure, and placement of material and source characteristics. SI Eminence v3.2 began shipping in March. For PC Windows-NT and Unix-based workstations, it is priced at $49,900.
