Business and technology news from the semiconductor and design tool industries.In the NewsIBM Microelectronics (Burlington, VT) and Synopsys .com/isdweb/&lf=isd-sendtolog"> Synopsys (Mountain View, CA) announced an agreement to form a partnership to perform joint research work on synthesis tools. The agreement calls for Synopsys .com/isdweb/&lf=isd-sendtolog"> Synopsys to pay IBM $40M in cash and notes over a period of six years for access and commercialization rights to IBM developed synthesis technologies. The intent of the joint research agreement is to develop the design methodologies for the next generation of ICs, with <0.25µ features. The main areas of focus are design planning, including timing and power; timing models and timing calculation capabilities; and test methodologies. American Microsystems, Inc. (Pocatello, ID) expanded its Canadian design center in Kanata to cover all of Canada. Satellite centers will be located in Montreal and Toronto. Advancel has relocated to 1735 N. First St., Suite 110, San Jose, CA 95110. INNOVA Design Solutions, Inc. opened their headquarters at 4699 Old Ironsides Drive, Suite 290, Santa Clara, CA 95054. Cascade Design Automation (Bellevue, WA) made a $10M software donation to the City University of Hong Kong. Sipex Corp. (Billerica, MA) was awarded ISO 9001 certification for design, manufacturing, and test of their product lines. Synopsys .com/isdweb/&lf=isd-sendtolog"> Synopsys ' (Mountain View, CA) Silicon Architects Business Unit announced a Cell-Based Array agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (Hsinchu, Taiwan) to make TSMC's CBA libraries accessible to the ASIC market. Xilinx (San Jose, CA) opened their new manufacturing and engineering facility in Ireland. IONA Technologies (Marlboro, MA) licenses Orbix object oriented technology to Silicon Graphics (Mountain View, CA). Orbix is a full and complete implementation of the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (Corba) standard.
Movers and ShakersSun Microelectronics, a division of Sun Microsystems, named Raj Parekh as vice-president and general manager of the new Embedded Products Group. Raj will oversee the business development, marketing, and engineering functions. Data I/O appointed Larry Vanderdriessche as vice-president and general manager of its Programming Systems Division. He will be responsible for all division functions. In addition, Susan Webber was promoted to vice-president of quality and human resources. Actel appointed Douglas D. Goodyear as vice-president, Worldwide Sales. He replaces M. Douglas Rankin who is retiring after ten years with Actel . Technology Modeling Associates named Joseph Masarich to the position of vice-president of sales. He will oversee TMA's worldwide sales and service efforts. In addition, Lung Chu was named to the position of vice-president of strategic alliances and business development Rahm Shastry joined Speed Electronic as vice-president of marketing. He will spearhead Speed's worldwide marketing efforts and will assist with business development and strategy. Virtual Chips augmented its senior management team with two new hires: Thomas L. Anderson is vice-president of engineering and Martin G. Harding is vice-president of sales and marketing. NEC Electronics appointed Shigeki Matsue as executive vice-president in the Mountain View, CA, headquarters and Sadayuki Kishi as senior vice-president of operations in the Roseville, CA, facility. Ascent Logic appoints Ken Czajka to the position of vice-president of Information Systems, Strategic Business Unit. He will be responsible for the transition of the RDD-100 product suite into the market. Dennis Kinion was appointed as vice-president of worldwide sales at Synario Design Automation, a division of Data I/O. Xilinx promoted Evert Wolsheimer to vice-president of product technology and Chris Taylor to vice-president of human resources. Attest Software appointed Suzanne Southworth as director of Worldwide Telesales. She will be responsible for telephone and Internet sales, marketing, and service. Money BitsSilicon Valley Research (Mountain View, CA) achieved listing on NASDAQ national market under the symbol SVRI. OrCAD (Beaverton, OR) filed with the SEC for an initial public offering of 3.2M shares of stock. Aavid Thermal Technologies (Laconia, NH) completed its IPO and is listed on NASDAQ as AATT. Teradyne's Assembly Test Division ( Walnut Creek, CA) announced record booking for Q4 1995. Orders were up 59% for the quarter and annual orders were up 41% over the previous year. Quickturn Design (Mountain View, CA) reports results for 1995. Revenues increased 25% and net income increased 184% over the previous year. Meta-Software (Campbell, CA) reported revenue of $25.28M for the year, up 29% over 1994. Net income for 1995 was $4.35M compared to $2.76M for 1994.
