Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a new video imaging technology that enables a complete 360° wrap-around view of a vehicle's perimeter in real time. This driver-assistance technology adapts to different situations, enabling the driver to peripherally view the entire surroundings of a vehicle, from the most appropriate point of view and field of view. The technology improves driving safety by helping the driver in a variety of situations, such as parking, passing and turning. This application note explains the technology, its background and benefits and how it works.

As Editor of Automotive Designline, I was able to witness a demonstration of this technology at SAE Convergence 2010. It provides truly amazing 3D coverage of the area around a car, via a bird's eye view point that can be varied in location.
In the demo, in a 2D image (overhead) of a pedestrian was not visible as a distinct image of a person, but the 3D image showed an easily recognizable form.

I hope this will be more of a benefit and less of a distraction to the driver. The picture above seems to be difficult to take in at a glance.
