In the rush to win the manufacturing contract, and to cut the costs of building the product, it is easy to overlook the long term life of the product. Usually EMS companies focus on achieving the best yield of tested, working product, delivered to the customer at the best price. What happens after is typically not their concern, although the better ones will help by providing a one year warranty. This paper looks at a complex micro-optic device and how it was re-engineered for reliability.
