This is quite common. Human relationships, egos are so unpredictable.

Several of us in an apartment near WPI decided to "clean" a roommate's room while he was at the library. We removed everything from his room (even the posters) and stored it in an unused room.
After we cleaned out the room, we left clues around the apartment on how he could find his stuff. I then left and went back to my apartment a few blocks away. A few hours later, the phone rang. It was him screaming "where's my stuff?!" Trying to play dumb, I said "calm down and explain what happened." He explained that the whole thing was my idea (it wasn't). His roommates blamed it all on me. They did help him put his room back together.

I have seen some pranks escalate to the point of being quite nasty, so I was always very careful to stay out of that game.
