AES Amsterdam: A selected virtual tour

5/28/2008 1:39 PM EDT

Although I wasn't able to attend the recent AES Convention in Amsterdam it's clear from reports I've received that there was plenty of interest to see (and hear). If I had gone, here are just a few of the events that I'd have tried to make it a point to attend:

Workshops:
Uneven bass reproduction in automobiles
Practical uses of acoustic modeling
Audio networking for the pros
Wow, this sounds great!

Tutorials:
Digital audio signals, filters, and equalizers
Perceptual audio evaluation
Electroacoustic measurements—part 1
Electroacoustic measurements—part 2
Quantization effects in audio signal processing

Master Classes:
Loudspeaker parameters
Concepts in sound quality
Linear audio power amplification
A universal grammar of class d audio amplification

Historical Events:
Shannon, Beethoven, and the compact disc
100 year of the triode
Recording history

Not to mention dozens of interesting papers in the paper sessions on topics including loudspeakers, audio networking, spatial audio perception and processing, signal processing, low bit-rate coding, and psychoacoustics, perception, and listening tests.

I also found a few interesting videos from the AES exhibition at Sonic State, a site for electronic musicians. The first is a short (6:02) interview with Stephan Wray of APT, a specialist in audio compression and delivery with their apt-X technology:

For more on this topic, see the Audio DesignLine feature articles "Audio coding for wireless applications" and "Bluetooth audio coding: Past, present and future."

The next video (3:31) includes a demo of Neutrik's unique convertCON unisex XLR cable connector, which can be converted to either a male or female connector simply by sliding the housing back and forth:

Finally, a spoksperson for Bruel & Kjaer has some fun with his "good colleague" Mr. Hatz - who happens to be a dummy measurement system (2:03):

If more videos or MP3s of interest from the show become available I'll try to note them here.
