Plight of the Tester

BobsUrUncle seems to have nailed the plight of the test engineer with his comment for our December cartoon showing a poor sod with a rack worth of equipment and sharks circling the boat.

His caption, "What are they talking about? Signal reception is fine here. How many test engineers do they have to send out here to verify it ???", won with 23% of the votes. kteam came in second with 17%. While gvictor and MarkBort tied for third place with 11%.

He will soon be the proud possessor of Daniel Guidera's color version of the cartoon bearing his winning caption. Plus, his caption will round out our retrospective.

Time is almost up to submit your caption for our January cartoon. And by the way, we've received a bit of testy criticism in the last two months about the choices for the final caption voting. We're happy to make this a more democratic process, as long as it doesn't become too cumbersome. Any suggestions on how to make the voting better for 2012??

Naomi, while I agree with some of the criticism, I think some of it has been a bit toooo testy. Not eveyone has the same sense of humour (thank God, else I probably wouldn't have Monty Python and Fawlty Towers ;-)

Obviously getting everyone to vote on ALL the captions would entail a fair bit of programming effort. And the earlier captions would likely get a lot more votes than the later ones.

But assuming you could get the programmers to put a "Vote for ME!" button by the side of every caption, AND come up with a mechanism to ensure anyone only votes once, maybe you could cut off new captions on say the 25th of the month, then stick the voting buttons on and let the readers do the rest.

Tall order, I know.

If that's in the too-hard basket, maybe a few more captions every month (say the judges top 20% of them) should be offered to give readers more likelihood of their favourite being in the running....

Bottom line: you can't please all the people all the time. But you're doing OK, the captions usually far outstrip the comments on other articles!

Hi Naomi,

I agree with David. A Facebook like 'like' button would be useful. There's probably some open source javascript out there for this purpose.

BTW, this is probably one of the most popular pages on the site. Kudos to you and EEtimes for bringing some levity to our busy lives.

I really enjoy it too -- I still find it hard to believe that part of my job is looking through Daniel's latest batch of cartoons and deciding which to use each month!

I'll talk to our Web developers and see if they can put in some sort of voting buttons. They are, of course, very busy folk and I would wager it will take time to get up and running.

In the mean time, do others agree with David that it would be nice to have more voting choices rather than our usual top 5?
