The EE Times 60 Emerging Startups list, first published in April 2004, has been updated to version 6.0 to reflect the latest corporate, commercial, technology and market conditions.
In version 6.0 of the EE Times Emerging Startups list, editors have selected companies based on a mix of criteria including: technology, intended market, maturity, financial position and investment profile. I have not taken part in the selection process but I am going to provide the portion of the list that deals directly with the EDA industry.

There are twelve EDA companies in the latest list, a remarkable 20% given that jut a few weeks ago a few commentators were giving the industry up for dead. In alphabetical order they are:

Arithmatica Inc. (Palo Alto, Calif.) started out in Warwick, England, as a licensor of IP libraries based on proprietary math circuitry. Company is transforming itself into an EDA company selling datapath synthesis software. Arithmatica has been on the list of emerging companies ever since its first publication, making it an emerging company for over three years. its latest product offerings incorporate the company expertise in numerical analysis to generate and optimize datapath circuitry. Its web address is: www.arithmatica.com.

Arteris Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) started in Paris as is an intellectual-property vendor that is commercializing a packet-based on-chip network. The company recently moved its headquarters to Silicon Valley while maintaining a French subsidiary. I have followed the company since its inception because I am a firm believer that network on chip is a better communication solution for SoC implementations than traditional bus architectures. Arteris made the list in October of 2004 and has been on it ever since. Its web address is: www.arteris.com.

Athena Design Systems Inc. (Santa Clara, Calif.), founded in 2003 by IC layout parameter extraction expert Dimitris Fotakis, is a provider of concurrent analysis and optimization tools that run alongside IC routing. Its Milos Meta Routing Optimization System features concurrent multi-scenario timing optimization. Its product places the company in a position to both service and take advantage of the multi-core architectures many think will be the foundation of the next growth segment in EDA. Its web address is: www.athenads.com.

Blaze DFM Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.), founded in October 2004, provides software to support "electrical DFM" and parametric yield for sub-100-nm circuits. The company landed $10 million in series B venture capital funding in March 2007 while also disclosing completion of its previously announced merger with Aprio Technologies Inc. It is surprising that this is the first time the company has made the list, since it is now considered well emerged and one of the leaders in the electrical DFM market segment. Its web address is: www.blaze-dfm.com

Calypto Design Systems Inc. (Santa Clara, Calif.), founded in 2002, is a privately held EDA company focused on bridging electronic system-level design and integrated circuit implementation with an emphasis on sequential analysis and optimization for power consumption. The company first made the list in the Fall of 2005 and, like most companies in the ESL segment, has taken some time to define its own personality and place in the market. Its web address is: www.calypto.com

Clear Shape Technologies Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.), founded in 2003, is a semiconductor design for manufacturing (DFM) software and technologies company. This is the second year on the list for the company that Gary Smith has identified as one of the most promising companies in the DFFM market segment. Its web address is: www.clearshape.com.

Codeplay Software Ltd. (Edinburgh, Scotland), founded in 1999, develops compiler technology and software development tools aimed at advanced processor architectures including multi-core processors. Although some people will argue that this company more properly belongs to the embedded systems market, I have included it in the EDA space because I strongly believe that without proper attention to software development, we will not have a system level market in EDA. Its web address is: www.codeplay.com.

Dafca Inc. (Boston, Mass.), a startup provider of EDA software tools that is working to apply a reconfigurable infrastructure platform for system-on-chip devices. STMicroelectronics is one of 14 companies that have signed letters of intent to use Dafca's tool. The company has been on the list of emerging companies since the Spring of 2005. It is also an example of the way EDA can be a viable part of the system level design market segment. It can be found on the web at: www.dafca.com.

Imperas Inc. (Palo Alto, Calif.) was formed in 2005 by Simon Davidmann, a serial EDA entrepreneur. The company plans to offer system development tools that combine the elaboration of both hardware and software while dealing with multiprocessing issues. The company has been on the emerging list for three issues. Many analysts have described it as very promising since it focuses on support of multi-core architectures. It can be found on the web at: www.imperas.com.

Invarium Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) is a provider of layout pattern synthesis tools which are architected for the 65-nanometer era and beyond. The company describes itself as a provider of Process and Proximity Compensation (PPC) solutions which, it says, is a replacement of traditional OPC technology. This is its second time on the list. It can be found at: www.invarium.com.

Takumi Technology Corp. (Sunnyvale, Calif.), founded in October 2003, is a supplier of critical dimension aware software solutions for backend tapeout defect analysis and layout optimization. This is the first time on the list. The company website is at: www.takumi-tech.com.

Xoomsys Inc. (Cupertino, Calif.), formed in 2004, is developing scalable, distributed processing software for large-scale circuit simulation using both industry-standard circuit simulators and inexpensive Linux computing clusters. Raul Camposano has recently joined the company as its CEO. More information can be found at: www.xoomsys.com.
