EDA/IP Weekly Roundup – September 26th

This is a roundup of news or activities in the past few days that may be of interest to people.
Dongbu HiTek will host the fifth annual “Analog Semiconductor Leaders’ Forum” on October 10th during i-SEDEX trade Sshow in Korea. Industry authorities will discuss the latest analog technology and marketing trends under the central theme, “Exploring new opportunities for analog technology in the smart convergence era.” Advance Registration is available at http://www.sedex.org/2012eng/dongbu/seminar.php. There is no charge to attend the forum but seating is limited.
EMA Design Automation announced its new Displaced Workers Training Program. This program provides free Cadence OrCAD training to out of work engineers and designers who are currently seeking employment. Classes are offered in select cites, and if students are unable to attend classroom sessions, training is also available virtually. The classes currently offered include: OrCAD Capture, OrCAD Capture CIS, Analog Simulation with PSpice, OrCAD PCB Editor (based on Allegro Technology), PSpice Advanced Analysis, and Advanced PCB Editor. Symtavision has launched SymTA/S 3.2, a system-level tool suite for planning, optimizing and verifying embedded real-time systems. SymTA/S 3.2 now features System-Level Distribution Analysis and AUTOSAR 4.x support. TraceAnalyzer 3.2 now includes scripting support and can be fully integrated with SymTA/S. The new System-Level Distribution Analysis covers entire systems and gives users the ability to undertake Typical Case analysis where communication paths are not safety critical.
Synopsys has announced that the Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Outreach Foundation has reached a major milestone of providing more than one million unique experiences to students and teachers developing science projects since the program's inception in 1999. Experiences include support for science project development, science fair sponsorship, competitions and teacher training offered through a range of Foundation programs.
GLOBALFOUNDRIES has launched a new technology designed for the expanding mobile market. The company’s 14nm-XM offering will give customers the performance and power benefits of three-dimensional “FinFET” transistors with less risk and a faster time-to-market, helping the fabless ecosystem maintain its leadership in mobility while enabling a new generation of smart mobile devices. The technology is expected to deliver a 40-60% improvement in battery life when compared to today’s two-dimensional planar transistors at the 20nm node.
element14 has announced that the Freescale Freedom hardware for Kinetis KL25 MCUs is available for same-day shipping through element14, the first distributor to stock it globally prior to the official market launch later this month. Five engineers have been selected for a special “Preview Roadtest” of this innovative platform. These five design engineers are among the element14 community’s top participants and come from the US, Australia and the UK. Initial Roadtest reviews can now be seen on the element14 community at http://www.element14.com/preview-roadtest and more of their evaluations and thoughts about potential uses of the platform will continue over the next month.
If you're involved in low-power electronics design, you'll find a lot of good information at a one-day Low-Power Technology Summit at Cadence headquarters in San Jose, California October 18. Highlighting the event is a keynote by Jan Rabaey, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of California at Berkeley, and somewhat of a "rock star" when it comes to low-power electronics and EDA. Rabaey literally "wrote the book" on low power design. It is called Low Power Design Essentials and it is available from Amazon.

Synopsys announces the availability of the DesignWare MIPI UniPro Controller for host and device storage, camera and display applications, and the DesignWare UFS Host Controller for storage applications. The new IP works in tandem with the multi-gear DesignWare MIPI M-PHY IP to accelerate the implementation of the MIPI Alliance UniPro and UFS interface standards in application processors, mobile systems-on-chips (SoCs) and peripheral ICs.
Analog Devices launched the CrossCore Embedded Studio (CCES) software development platform for their Blackfin and SHARC processors. CCES offers Blackfin and SHARC developers a C/C++ and assembly editing environment with plug-in support for drivers and services including Ethernet, USB, algorithmic software modules, operating system, and file system. CCES provides easy to use, integrated multicore development and debug features. CCES licenses are available at several levels. A single-user node locked license is priced at $995.
ProPlus Design Solutions has unveiled NanoYield™ that provides yield prediction and optimization software for memory, logic, analog and digital circuit design. Faster than traditional Monte Carlo analysis for both regular three-sigma and advanced six-sigma analysis, NanoYield is part of ProPlus Design Solutions’ transistor-level statistical modeling and design and variations-aware product portfolio. It features High Sigma analysis, advanced Monte Carlo analysis and NanoSPICE™ parallel SPICE simulator to accelerate statistical simulation performance.
ChipEstimate.com says that Global Unichip Corporation (GUC) has signed as the portal's newest partner. GUC joined ChipEstimate.com to leverage its extensive IP portfolio and develop customized ASICs for the growing systems, IDM and Fabless markets. ChipEstimate.com hosts over 9,000 pieces of IP from more than 200 vendors and leading foundries worldwide. The portal is the destination point for engineering teams looking to learn about and explore the latest design and verification IP for their next chip designs.
Aldec has announced availability of Active-HDL™ 9.2, an HDL-based FPGA Design and Simulation solution now offering flexible file management to allow engineers to effortlessly manage complex FPGA projects. This enables designers to create project structures compatible with FPGA synthesis and place and route tools – allowing one common project structure to be used between multiple vendor tools. Team-based design features are also interwoven with the new file management feature to allow the design environment to be set up quickly, even when team members work from multiple locations.
The IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA) will present two achievement awards during the opening session of the International Conference on Computer-Aided Design (ICCAD) November 5 at the Hilton Hotel in San Jose. Luca Carloni, associate professor of Computer Science at Columbia University in New York, will receive this year's Early Career Award for seminal contributions to system-level design, including latency-insensitive design, on-chip communications synthesis and compositional design-space exploration. Joel Phillips of Cadence Design Systems will be presented with the Outstanding Service Contribution Award for his work as ICCAD's General Chair in 2011.
The IPC-2581 Consortium, the collective group of PCB design and supply chain companies devoted to enabling, facilitating and driving the use of IPC-2581 in the industry, announced today that consortium members have fabricated the industry's first PCB by transferring the design data to manufacturing in the IPC-2581 format, while reducing overall fabrication time by 30 percent. X-FAB Silicon Foundries has announced it will invest more than $50M during the next three years in cleanroom space, new equipment, R&D and staff for its MEMS operations. These investments reflect X-FAB’s focus on MEMS to support the expected growth in MEMS services. The new brand X-FAB MEMS Foundry on X-FAB’s campus in Erfurt focuses solely on advanced MEMS manufacturing and developments, and will consolidate all of X-FAB’s MEMS business and activities.
EMA Design Automation has announced the release of EMA Part Link™, a Cadence® OrCAD® Capture app that connects parts on the schematic to the vast Digi-Key® database of immediately available components. Part Link is a simple app that allows a designer to download part information directly into the part on the schematic. Common information needed, like manufacturer, manufacturer part number, distributor, and distributor part number, are all mapped by default.
