Taiwan rolls smart lighting specs

In an attempt to create a highly integrated supply chain and improve its ability to compete in the LED arena, Taiwan has placed five intelligent lighting system standards on the table. Approved so far by six major lighting associations and two state-funded institutes, the standards still must be approved at the national level.
The standards cover such areas as system functions, wide area networks, field area networks, design guides for field area networks, and lighting device specifications. According to Gary Tsai, research director at the Industrial Technology Research Institute, “Our volume is higher than that of Japan and South Korea, but our output value has lagged behind them.”
The output value of LED components Tsai refers to is expected to reach US$4.59 billion this year, down 1.7% from US$4.67 billion in 2011. According to the Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA), Japan will surpass Taiwan to become the top LED component manufacturing country this year. Japan’s output value is estimated to rise 12% to US$4.86 billion in 2012 from US$4.33 billion in 2011. In comparison, South Korea’s output value is expected to total US$3.48 billion in 2012.
