Max's Cool Beans

To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub

Clive Maxfield

I am currently wearing my sleep-deprived face (and let's not talk about my hair).

I don’t tend to take much in the way of medication, but the last couple of days have left me a little on the battered and bewildered side. This it was that yesterday evening when I went to bed, I took a couple of Tylenol PM to ease the pains of the day and give me a good night's sleep.

This plan worked on one level, but there was a fly in the "soup of snooze". On the one hand I got a really good night's sleep; however, I dreamed all night.

And what was my dream? Well, I'm glad you asked. For some reason I was in the army. Furthermore, I was in a shared dormitory with a bunch of other guys and it was nighttime and we had all gone to bed. But, what with all of the snoring and whatnot going on around me, I couldn’t get to sleep. I lay there for hours – tossing and turning – without being able to drop off.

The end result has been to leave me in a somewhat confused state. As I say, on the one hand I did get a good night's sleep; but on the other hand, my recollection is that of being awake all night. Now my head hurts…

If you can just perfect the art of dreaming you're asleep, Max, you could probably get away with 4 hours a night instead of 8!

That would be very handy, because there simply aren't enough hours in the day :-)

Interesting phenomenon. I sometimes dream that I am asleep. And once, I remember I dreamt I was asleep, and in my dream sleep, I had a dream!. I was somewhat confused when I had to wake up twice and figure out whether I was still dreaming.
Confused?

This is a not-uncommon theme in horror films -- but it's strange when it happens to you...
