Will OLEDs really grab hold in mobiles?

If you believe a report released by market research firm iSuppli yesterday, OLEDs will move from controlling 1 percent of the market now to 87 percent of the market by 2010. According to the report, this shift will come at the cost of LCDs, which dominate the mobile display market today.

There's no doubt that OLEDs are cool. And there's also no doubt that OLEDs are needed. Just look back at an article I wrote in 2002 on OLEDs and you'll see that even back then we predicted OLEDs as the future choice for mobile designers.

But, what concerns me is that we're having the same discussion today that we had in 2002. So you have to wonder, is the OLED hype real? My gut says the answer is yes. But 2010 is a long way off and LCDs will continue to evolve and other display technologies will emerge. And that's got to make you wonder whether the move to OLEDs is hype or reality. Guess time will only tell.
