Ultimate Screw-ups

The case of the calendar screw-up

Karen Field

When it comes to printed calendars, it seems like it would be very difficult to screw one up. So needless to say I was a bit discombobulated when I looked at my desk calendar to confirm a recent appointment.

Can you identify the problem?

The calendar features a collection of Wondermark cartoons from David Malki, who uses Victorian images in his panels in particularly funny and absurd ways. I frequently find them laugh-out-loud-- check them out here. Fortunately there was an easy fix, as outlined in his response:

"I was notified today that apparently November and December have two "22" dates. It was news to me until this morning! My explanation is that it doesn't count as a mistake if they are ALL like that (which they are). My suggested fix is attached (see below). This is a user-serviceable item."

Coincidentally, my nephew's birthday is November 22--so he was naturally quite thrilled over the error!

It's nice that he was willing to let you make the fix without voiding the warranty. Perhaps, he'd even go so far as to allow the mod to be released open source under a Creative Commons license.

I had exactly the same problem in one of my calendars a few months ago. Must be catching......

Some weeks are that way, in that they have a second Monday, which for quite a few months was the day that the weekend emergency problems all had to be fixed.
Or like Garfield (the cat) used to say,"I know there is a Monday out there just waiting for me". Sometimes he is right.

Just think about the poor person whose birthday fell on November 23rd. They would have missed out entirely! I like the suggested fix, but wonder if the QA department was fired for missing this obvious mistake.

I have to presume the calendar's designer had two "Ex's"...one born on 23 November and one born on 23 December.

That would explain it. : )
